  1. Some are actually pretty good:
    5. Upholding justice. Not 6, however; that’s hearsay.
    9. Not good policy for neighborly relations.
    10. Just think if you lost something.
15-16. My brother (majored in animal husbandry) told me that at that time, in that part of the world, raising swine was about the fastest way for a farmer to go broke.
    18. I wouldn’t either.
    25-33. Ewwww!
    42. Not reaping to the edge was an act of charity, leaving some for the widows and orphans.
    44-53. Just common sense.
    63. Criminal today.
    65. Good manners. (I would love to be treated with such overt respect – nah).
    66. Proper hospitality.
    67. Fraud.
    74. Common law.
    75. The idea that property ownership was more an obligation to the society than a right to use as one pleased.

But I didn’t need Ceiling Cat to tell me such things – any well-ordered, liberal society would embrace the sensible ones.

  2. Am I going blind, or does this fail to ban father-daughter sex?

    • No, you’re not going blind and yes, the Bible has several instances of father-daughter sex. Lot’s daughters were quite the pair.

    • It kind of does in number 34. If you’re having sex with your daughter, you’ve also had sex with her mother, and #34 says that’s not okay. Still, an explicit statement of the whole “no sex with your daughter” thing would be better.

  3. Wait a minute in Deuteronomy 25: 5 and Matthew 22:23 you’re supposed to marry you sister-in-law if your brother dies. Does the Bible still consider her your sister-in-law or does your brother dying change that?

  4. Ugli – Thanks for the list. It is worth keeping for reuse. I enjoy your blogs. You might enjoy my blog “The Kosher Pig”. Graygoosegosling

I stumbled upon this post the other day and it is worth reposting.
This country is under attack by right-wing religious zealots who use their fear, hatred, and the Bible as their Constitution and as their moral guide. Guess what? They expect the rest of the country to do the same. Once again, the group under attack are homosexuals, and the zealots are using the book of Leviticus as a guide to how we as society should ‘deal’ with homosexuals. “Hey, it’s the word of God, we can’t go against Him!”
Oh really now? So, my question is, what about the rest of Leviticus? How can these hard-core, devout Christians who allegedly live and breathe by the Bible, only choose the parts of the Bible that suits their lame ‘arguments’? This is one of the finest examples of hypocrisy around.
Take a gander at this post and at the rest of the blog. I’m still exploring it but so far, it’s chock-full of interesting stuff.
The separation of Church and State is lost on some folks unless it’s the separation of Mosque and State, or Temple and State.

    Enjoy.

  6. I scored a 35 (ish)… and since “confession is good for a laugh” I posted my list on my blog. How did you all do?

Hmm…funny how nobody tries to outlaw these things. Nope, just gay marriage (or, as I like to call it, MARRIAGE). I will never understand how people arrive at such hateful and ignorant conclusions.

  8. Interesting. Does not ban sleeping with your wife’s sister.

  9. Wow. I am surprised I am not sent to hell before I die!

  10. Reblogged this on Atheists in Action and commented:
It is natural for an atheist to pick and choose from this list of ancient suggestions concerning good behavior, but it is hypocritical for a believer to do the same because they imaging this to be the inspired word of God. The complete list should be honored.

So believers, while number 25 makes sense and should be pretty easy to follow for any normal person, number 54 is utterly ridiculous, and I don’t even what to attempt to explain what is wrong with number 57.
